Sometimes you'll see more than two numbers together. The same trick works: check the tens first. The number that is bigger than all the others is the biggest. The number that is smaller than all the others is the smallest.

Sometimes when we add digits together, we get a number bigger than 9. When that happens, we need to carry — and that's what we'll learn today!

Parts of a whole

A fraction tells us about parts of a whole. When you cut a pizza into equal slices, each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza!

A fraction has two numbers. The top number (numerator) tells how many parts we have. The bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal parts the whole is split into.

💡 Example: If a pizza is cut into 4 slices and you eat 1, you ate ¼ (one quarter) of the pizza!

🎂 Both cakes are split into the same 6 pieces. 5/6 has more pieces shaded than 2/6, so 5/6 is larger — it's the largest of the two, and 2/6 is the smallest. When the bottom numbers match, the fraction with the bigger top number is the biggest (largest) one!

📏 Remember the last slide? Different bottom numbers: more pieces = smaller pieces (½ > ⅓ > ¼). Same bottom number: more shaded = bigger fraction (5/6 > 2/6). Two different jobs!

📍 The line goes from 0 to 1, split into 4 equal jumps. Each jump lands on a mark, and each mark is worth ¼. The pink dot sits at ¾ — three jumps from 0.

👉 A fraction's bottom number tells you how many equal jumps (and marks) fit between 0 and 1. The top number tells you which mark you've landed on.
